Eligibility

To become an American Marshall Memorial Fellow, a candidate must:

  • be between the ages of 28 and 40 on January 1st of the travel year
  • be a citizen or permanent resident of the United States
  • have an outstanding record of achievement in their profession
  • have a proven record of sustained and effective civic/community engagement
  • exhibit potential for lifelong learning and continued leadership development
  • show a commitment to remain engaged with MMF after graduation
  • be available to travel during designated periods of the year of travel
  • be available for 24 consecutive days of travel
  • have not resided for an extensive period of time on the other side of the Atlantic

Prior transatlantic travel (study abroad, tourism, etc.) is permissible. Only recent, prolonged, experience or residence in Europe nullifies eligibility.

  • Speak English proficiently
  • Possess a passport valid at least six months beyond the assigned fellowship dates 

In addition to the criteria listed above, strong candidates will be intellectually curious, mature, thoughtful, flexible, independent, and resourceful team players.
