Global Learning Faculty Fellows

Purpose and goals

The Global Learning Faculty Fellows Initiative (GLFFI) aims to support the internationalization of the university's curriculum and provides opportunities for global engagement by introducing or offering a virtual international component in an undergraduate course.

Faculty fellows collaborate with colleagues at one of Wayne State's 150 international partner institutions, engaging in a "virtual exchange" through shared projects and activities delivered as part of a regularly scheduled undergraduate course offered in the 2023-2024 academic year.

The Office of International Programs launched the GLFFI in 2021 to increase the opportunities for students to engage globally and help them develop cultural competencies regardless of their means or circumstances.

Eligibility

Up to 15 current full-time faculty members from all academic disciplines are invited to apply for the next GLFF cohort. Faculty must submit a statement of interest, which will be forwarded to and reviewed with the deans of their respective school/college. Deans will nominate members of their schools/colleges for the fellowships.

Global learning experience is not required for nominees, but they must be committed to all phases of this program.

Project requirements

Collaborations can be modular and/or project-based, and can span a few weeks or the entire semester for a specific course offering. Fellows will receive direct instructional support for the course(s) in which the virtual exchange is implemented.

Fellows are required to complete the Global Fellows Academy as described below, and must formalize a collaboration with a colleague at one of WSU's international partners. An initial report and a final report, including learning goals, assessment and reflection, are required from each fellow.

Timeline

Statement of interest submissions are due April 21.

Selection of fellows/award notifications will be announced April 28.

The Global Fellows Academy, including synchronous and asynchronous workshops, will be provided by the global learning design coordinator and the coordinator for faculty engagement the week of May 15. Each daily session requires approximately two hours of work, and fellows are required to participate in all aspects of the workshops.

  • May 15: 10-11:30 a.m., in-person
  • May 16: 10-11:30 a.m., Zoom
  • May 17: 10-11:30 a.m., format TBD
  • May 18: asynchronous work
  • May 19: 10 a.m.-12:30 p.m., in-person

Individual check-ins begin May 22.

Fellows must formalize a collaboration with a colleague at one of WSU's international partner universities and provide an initial report of the collaboration by July 31. Collaborations can expand existing partnerships or create new ones. The Office of International Programs will assist with the matching process.

Final reports for fall 2023 classes are due in January 2024; final reports for winter 2024 classes are due in May 2024.

Financial support

Faculty fellows will be provided a $2,500 summer stipend, paid in three installments, to cover expenses related to the development, implementation and assessment of this initiative and other activities that strengthen and expand student and faculty global connections.

In addition, fellows will receive a voucher to cover up to $3,000 of travel expenses directly related to this educational exchange program. Vouchers will be issued at the end of the fellowship.
