Fellowship Readiness Cohort

2021-2022 Pilot Plan

What is it?

A one-year pilot program to build skills and relationships among students who are often under-represented in major national fellowship applications.

What are our goals?

Through this program we seek to build capacity and confidence among students who have the potential to be fellowship applicants but who might not think of themselves as qualified or may lack the support systems that other potential applicants take for granted.

What are our specific objectives?

We will work with students to prepare at least one application for a major fellowship, depending on the schedule and interest of the student.  Possible fellowships include Boren (languages), Rangel (international relations), Gilman (study abroad), LatinX44 (public service) and Fulbright Summer (open), and we will work with students to explore other options. In years that follow, we will continue to help students with upper-level fellowships such as the Truman, Rhodes and Marshall Scholarships

What will we do?

Participants will receive a combination of meetings with faculty and other students with a combination of one-on-one coaching, seminar presentations and faculty referrals.

When we will do it?

Month Action
June-July Invitation for organizational and self-nominations.
August Invitations sent to accepted students. Cohort assembled
September In-person kickoff meeting. Individual orientation.
October-December First in-person seminar. Individual coaching begins.
January-March Second in-person seminar. Ongoing application support.
April Wrap-up meeting. Ongoing application support.

Who is eligible?

The program will focus on preparing rising sophomores, but other students may be accepted on a case-by-case basis.

How can students join?

Cohort participants will be chosen from among those nominated by organizations participating in Wayne State's VIP Coalition along with related groups and student self-nominations. Links to nomination forms are here:
