At the April 28, 2023 meeting of the Board of Governors, the staff of the Office of Fellowships introduced several of Wayne State University’s most recent fellowship recipients to the board and administration. These students represent just a sample of Wayne State’s fellowship recipients in what has been a record year for the university (left to right):

  • Layali Awadallah, 1st year Accounting Major, Critical Language Scholarship: Russian
  • Ibrahim (Abe) Ahmad, senior, Public Affairs Major, Rangel Graduate Fellowship (Georgetown University)
  • Aaron Keathley, senior, Economics Major, Marshall Scholarship, London School of Economics and University of Nottingham
  • Michael Drasher, 4th year MD/PhD (Anthropology), Fulbright, Sierra Leone
  • Jeren Ghoujeghi, senior, Public Health, Truman Scholarship Finalist

Layali and Aaron also offered their own perspectives:

Marshall Scholar Aaron Keathley told the board that: "I derived the greatest value from their reaching out to me and that they gave me the confidence to know that I am worthy of applying[...]They convinced me that a Wayne State kid was deserving of this scholarship[...]Without the Office of Fellowships, not only would I have not won this scholarship, I likely would have never applied to or even known that it existed.”

Critical Language Scholarship Recipient Layali Awadallah noted that: "I honestly didn’t think that I would have the capabilities to push through this application process if it weren’t for the support of Dr. Kevin Deegan-Krause, the Honors College, and the Office of International Programs. Any questions I had about the application process, they were there to help me and more."
