International athletes take top honors at GLIAC Swimming and Diving Championships
Athletes from around the world helped Wayne State's swimming and diving team win numerous events during the GLIAC Championships Feb. 20-23 at Cleveland State. Highlights include:
Junior Sasha Palazzo broke the pool record and the GLIAC meet record in the 100 breast
Men
Redshirt junior Ahmed Ahmed (Alexandria, Egypt) won the 500 Free;
Junior Leonardo de Oliveira (Sao Paulo, Brazil) won the 1000 Free (Meet Record) and 1650 Free;
Senior Dima Drobnych (Kryvyi Rih, Ukraine) was on three championship relays (200 Medley, 400 Medley and 400 Free). Both medleys set Pool Records;
Junior Joao Martimbianco Ribeiro (Sao Paulo, Brazil) won the 400 Individual Medley (Meet Record);
Redshirt freshman Franz Mueller (Brandenburg, Germany) swam leadoff in the champion 400 free relay;
Senior Rasmus Olsen (Kastrup, Denmark) was on three championship relays (200 Medley, 400 Medley and 400 Free);
Junior Sasha Palazzo (Verona, Italy) won two individual GLIAC titles (100 breast - Pool Record; and 200 breast) and was on two championship relays (200 Medley and 400 Medley).
Women
Senior Lezlie Bueno Estrada anchored the champion 800 Free Relay Senior Lezlie Bueno Estrada (Chihuahua, Mexico) swam leadoff on the champion 200 Free Relay, and swam anchor on the champion 800 Free Relay;
Sophomore Jia Yi Koh (Subang Jaya, Malaysia) was the GLIAC Champion in the 100 breast, and was on three championship relays (200 and 400 Medley Relay and 800 Free Relay); and
Emily Marginean (Tecumseh, Ontario, Canada) was the GLIAC champion in the 400 Individual Medley in a GLIAC Meet Record time. She also swam leadoff on the champion 800 Free Relay.
