International Education Week, a joint initiative of the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Department of Education, focuses on the benefits of international education and exchange worldwide with the goal of preparing American students for a global environment and attracting future leaders from abroad to study, learn, and exchange experiences in the United States.

Join us for a free presentation and book signing with author/alumnus Vivek Sreedhar, who will share his experiences as an international student and provide tips that will help all students prepare for success both inside and outside the classroom.

Ever wonder what American students mean when they invite you to "pre-game?" Sreedhar had to figure that out, and how to convert rupees to dollars, and what the best cell phone plan is for international calling. He can relate to names being butchered; argue Bollywood vs. Hollywood; and understands what it's like to be called an FOB (Fresh off the Boat). His humorous and informative reflections on his time at Wayne State will help all students bridge the gap between cultures.

Sreedhar, who works in marketing/R&D for Alps Electric North America, received a master's in electrical engineering in 2006 and an MBA in 2009, both from Wayne State.

Breaking Stereotypes for Better Cultural Understanding

International Education Week Keynote Presentation

Join alumnus and former U.S. Ambassador to Slovenia Yousif B. Ghafari for a discussion about his experiences as an international student, business leader and philanthropist. Ghafari, namesake of the Ghafari Residence Hall on the WSU campus, is chairman of Ghafari Associates and a member of the College of Engineering's Hall of Fame. A native of Lebanon, Ghafari moved to Detroit when he was 19 and enrolled at WSU, receiving a bachelor's in math in 1974, a master's in applied math and computer applications in 1975 and a master's in chemical engineering in 1981. After earning an MBA from Michigan State, he became a licensed professional engineer determined to build his future on the use of computers in manufacturing design. Among many notable architectural and engineering projects on his firm's resume are refurbishment of Old Main and work on the Danto Engineering Development Center. Learn more about one of WSU's most illustrious alumni and ask him about the secret to his success during this keynote presentation, which will be followed by a reception in the Partrich lobby.
