New Procedures for Entering U.S. on Student Visas

Effective immediately, the Department of Homeland Security has ordered U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents to verify that every foreign student who wants to enter the United States has a valid student visa. Visa status verification will be done using the Federal Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) and will occur before students arrive in the U.S. using information provided in flight manifests. Students whose port of entry is at either the U.S./Canadian tunnel or bridge should expect delays because the visa status verification cannot be done prior to their arrival and are being encouraged to add up to 1 ½ hours to their commute.
