Workshops help non-native English speakers improve workplace communications

Two new online workshops to help non-native English speakers improve their communication skills will be offered by Wayne State University beginning in early 2021. Both workshops are focused on professionals, or those who plan to enter or rejoin the workforce.

The English Language Institute created the eight-week workshops, which begin Feb. 8. The Oral Communication Skills workshop will help participants improve their speaking and pronunciations skills that are relevant in both remote and face-to-face environments, while improving their overall fluency and intelligibility in spoken English to foster more effective and confident communication on remote interactive platforms such as Zoom, as well as more effective communication while masked.

The Written Skills workshop will enhance and improve business and technical writing skills. Participants will compose and receive feedback on a series of real-world writing tasks including resumes, emails, business letters, short reports and formal proposals. Participants will build credibility and enhance impact with readers, Improve clarity and accuracy for increased readability and use editing tools such as Grammarly more effectively

Both workshops require participants to work through online instructional modules independently and meet with the instructor and other participants in a weekly one-hour Zoom meeting scheduled at a mutually convenient time.

Each workshop costs $499 for the eight-week series. For details, including registration, visit us online at https://eli.wayne.edu/program/evening-courses. Questions? Email Bruce Morgan, director of the ELI, at b.morgan@wayne.edu.
