Conditional admission
If you don't have the minimum level of English language proficiency needed for admission to Wayne State, but you meet all other admission requirements for your academic program, you are still eligible for conditional admission to most degree programs at WSU. Conditional admission (also known as "provisional admission") means that you are eligible for admittance to WSU after you meet the English proficiency requirement.
Applying for conditional admission
International students interested in admission to a degree program at Wayne State after they complete their English studies in the English Language Institute should do the following:
- Submit an application for admission directly to Wayne State University.
- Submit an Application for Conditional Admission to the ELI.
- Submit a Statement of Financial Support if you are applying for a student (F-1) visa. Be prepared to upload the following:
- If a government, agency, or organization is providing funding to the applicant for studies in the United States, a verification letter from the government, agency, or organization of this sponsorship.
- If personal/family funds are to be used, a bank statement to cover at least one year of expenses in the United States.
We work with university departments to determine whether all other admission requirements have been met. If they are met, you can enroll in English classes at the ELI where you will study full time until meeting the university's English proficiency requirement.
Once you satisfactorily complete all advanced-level ELI courses in the Academic English band (or achieve the minimum score needed on an English language proficiency exam as determined by the undergraduate or graduate admission requirements), you will meet the general English language proficiency requirement for admission to WSU. Then you can receive admission to your intended academic degree program!
Visa interview
When conditionally admitted, you'll receive these documents to present at your visa interview:
- ELI Form I-20 A-B
- ELI admission letter
- Official conditional admission letter from Wayne State University
The ELI Form I-20 A-B will be changed into a University Form I-20 A-B after you meet the English language proficiency requirements for University admission.
Confirming your application to WSU
If you are an ELI student in the advanced level, you should contact the appropriate admissions office at WSU to confirm submission of all the required application documents and stay aware of deadlines for your degree program.
- Undergraduate students should contact the Office of Undergraduate Admissions.
- Graduate students should contact the Office of Graduate Admissions.
