Summer courses
For those interested in improving their English and academic skills in a short-term program, the ELI offers an 8-week session for students of all levels of English proficiency.
The summer program is independent of the ELI Intensive English Program, and does not automatically qualify you for general university admission. You can take the placement test at the end of August to determine whether you need additional intensive courses to meet WSU's English proficiency requirement for admission.
Class hours: up to 14 class hours per week
Dates: June 30-August 19, 2021
Available levels: Levels 1-3
Beginning and intermediate classes will focus on communicative skills such as listening, speaking, and pronunciation, and integrate reading, writing, and grammar.
Advanced classes will strengthen communication skills while emphazing academic skills.
The summer session includes approximately 100 teacher contact hours, placement testing, advising, orientation and access to the ELI reading library. You also will participate in social activities and recreational field trips hosted by the ELI and the Office of International Programs.
The ELI summer program has three levels with two courses in each level. Each course is eight class hours per week. The course descriptions are below.
- Writing Skills 1: Integrates reading, writing and grammar and focuses on comprehending main ideas and details, understanding simplified reading texts and vocabulary in context. You will learn to organize and write paragraphs with simple, grammatically correct sentences.
- Writing Skills 2: Integrates reading, writing and grammar, emphasizing how they are related. Rhetorical modes of essay writing will be introduced, you will read a novel, and more advanced grammar points will be covered.
- Writing Skills 3: Integrates reading, writing and grammar, focusing on reading authentic materials and writing essays. You will improve your understanding and use of American English, grammar and mechanics for academic settings.
- Oral Skills 1: Integrates listening and speaking in English and introduces culturally appropriate interaction in speech. You will listen to dialogues, newscasts and short lectures; give short presentations on a variety of topics; and receive individualized feedback on pronunciation.
- Oral Skills 2: Integrates listening and speaking in English and focuses on refining your abilities to understand academic and informal spoken language by listening to academically themed lectures and extended dialogues. You will develop critical thinking skills for responding to questions and giving presentations.
- Oral Skills 3: Integrates listening and speaking in English and helps you increase your aural/oral fluency by participating in academic/content-based discussions and other forms of speech in formal, informal, and academic settings.
