Special services
Learning doesn't just occur in the classroom. The ELI also offers a variety of activities that help you build community and strengthen your English skills in real-life situations. We provide these additional services for our ELI students to bolster confidence and make English language learning fun.
Enrich your learning experience
There are many opportunities for you to enrich your learning experience and become more familiar with American culture and people outside the classroom. You can participate in several cultural and recreational activities or field trips each semester at discounted prices or for free. Typical ELI activities include visits to:
- Museums and special landmarks in Detroit
- Movie theaters and concert halls
- Shopping areas
- Parks and natural attractions
- Restaurants, eateries, and cafes
- Ice skating rinks and bowling alleys
- Holiday and seasonal festivals
- Cities in the metropolitan Detroit area
Contact Ellen Barrett, the Student Services Coordinator, by emailing eh1099@wayne.edu for a full schedule for each semester and for answers to any questions you have. You can also find out about these special experiences on the ELI Facebook page.
Speak with native English speakers
The best way to learn any language is to talk regularly with native speakers. So, each term the ELI can pair you with an American native English speaker for about one hour a week for informal conversation. You can sign up for this helpful program at any time during the semester, and the ELI will attempt to find a partner for you.
Apply online if you are interested in participating, and contact Ellen Barrett, the Student Services Coordinator, by emailing eh1099@wayne.edu if you have any questions.
