Funding for study and research abroad

WSU faculty collaborate with institutions around the world. The first place to start is your departmental leadership. However, even when they support your academic project, there may not always be funding to assist with activities abroad. Depending on your project, there may be additional resources available to you as WSU faculty:

Fulbright Scholar Program

Fulbright is the Department of State's flagship cultural and educational exchange program.  American citizens are eligible for Fulbright faculty awards that provide funding for international scholarship, teaching, research and exchange.

Fulbright offers two main awards for faculty:

  • U.S. Scholar Awards last between 3-12 months, depending on the award, allowing for research and/or teaching at a host institution abroad.
  • The Specialist Program is Fulbright's short-term award, lasting for 2-6 weeks and focusing on project-based exchanges.

Pivot

Within the Division of Research, WSU subscribes to Pivot, a searchable database that contains external funding opportunities from many government and private sources, accessible to WSU students, faculty, and staff. It is the largest, most comprehensive database available of external funding opportunities. Users can build profiles, save searches, track opportunities, and set up funding alerts. This tool is immensely helpful and gives you access to a wide range of funding sources that can help make your project a reality.

Division of Research

The Office of the Vice President for Research administers funding opportunities for internal competitions as well as external grants that limit institutional submissions. There are often grants available that support work anywhere in the U.S. or abroad, without the same citizenship requirements as other exchanges.
