Promoting study abroad

Faculty members work hard to develop and realize meaningful study abroad programs. To help ensure the success of your program, you can promote your program and additional study abroad opportunities throughout the year to plant the seed of interest in students. This in turn encourages students to consider going overseas earlier in their academic careers.

Study Abroad Fair

The Study Abroad Fair in September gives you the opportunity to participate at an information table for your faculty-led program. This is the perfect way to recruit students for your program and answer questions about expectations, costs, coursework and credits. Bring flyers and a sign-up sheet so you can contact students who visit your table. It may take a year or more before a student participates, so keep in touch with them and provide updates, information about payment deadlines and encouragement.

Study abroad alumni

Connecting current students with former study abroad participants is one of the best ways to promote your program. Students respond well to peers who talk honestly about their international experience, so including study abroad alumni at your information table and inviting them to speak to your class is an effective tool to promote your program.

Student organizations

Talking to student organizations such as those recognized by the Dean of Students Office is a highly successful activity for promoting study abroad. Many student organizations, including sororities and fraternities, host guest speakers as part of their professional development efforts. These diverse groups offer a different audience outside of your classroom.

International Education Week

International Education Week, a joint activity of the U.S. Department of State and U.S. Department of Education, occurs annually in November. Staff from the Office of International Programs work with faculty and academic departments to create programming that celebrates the benefits of international education, and a session about your study abroad program can be included in campus-wide promotions. Email oip@wayne.edu to learn how we can help organize your event.

Presentations to your class

Staff from the Office of Study Abroad and Global Programs welcome the opportunity to talk to classes about study abroad programs. Email studyabroad@wayne.edu to request a presentation or get help creating a promotional flyer. Please note that because of the large volume of requests, particularly at the beginning of the academic year, our staff needs approximately four weeks' notice to schedule presentations. Design efforts can generally be completed within two weeks.
