Utilities

Some rentals include utilities such as gas, electric, cable and internet, but not all do. Carefully review your lease before signing to determine if any utilities are included in your rent, or whether you are responsible for setting them up on your own and paying the company directly.

You may be required to have a Social Security number or proof that you are in the country legally to set up an account with a utility company, so make sure to have this information available when you contact them.

Internet and bundling

Some companies offer "bundles" or "packages" that include internet, phone and television. These vary by company and they can save you money. Carefully review these offers to see if they require a multi-year contract, which could last longer than your time in the U.S. You also can enroll in a month-to-month plan that requires no contract and allows you to change providers at any time, but this may cost you more money overall. Consider all your options before making a commitment.
