Tuition and fees
Tuition in the English Language Institute (ELI) is based on:
- Your class standing (freshman, sophomore, junior, senior, or post-bachelor)
- Your residency status (in-state or out-of-state/international)
- The number of credit/contact hours in which you enroll each semester
The information below serves as an estimate of what you can expect to pay for tuition as a student in the ELI.
Tuition and fees for ELI courses 2023-2024

Note: These prices are for students enrolled in ELI courses only. If a student is taking academic courses, the tuition rate is the same as the rate for their academic classes. Fees subject to change without prior notice.
Non-residents/International students:
- Tuition: $7,908.06
- On-campus housing and food: $5,284
- Books and supplies: $200
- Health Insurance: $870.50 (Fall) / $712.26 (Winter) / $2,054.20 (annual)
- Personal Expenses: $750
- Total per semester: $15,012.56
Note: Tuition estimate is based on non-resident, out-of-state tuition rates, and housing estimate is based on a furnished, triple-occupancy on-campus residence hall with an unlimited meal plan. Fees subject to change.
Residents of Michigan:
- Tuition: $3,886.02
- Books and supplies: $200
- Parking: $230
- Total per semester: $4,316.02
Students should be prepared to pay the full amount of tuition due within the week after classes begin. Otherwise, late payment fees will accrue. A variety of payment options are available, including via credit card, international wire and cash (which is only accepted in person). Learn more about the process for each type of payment. ELI students should also expect to pay a $264.26 registration fee each semester (this amount is included in the tuition fees above).
If you want to receive a 100% tuition refund, you must officially drop classes by notifying the ELI office by the "Last Day for Tuition Cancellation" deadline that is indicated on the Registration Calendar. The last day to drop classes and receive a full refund is usually during the second week of classes, but check the calendar for specific dates.
